Issue 266: From Hell’s Heart…
Nightmare Fuel is the official newsletter for fans of my work. Thank you for subscribing. Please share it with others if you think they might be interested!
In just a few days, I’ll be hopping in the car (along with my pal JimmyZ) and driving to Omaha, Nebraska. I’m going to be attending the Free Comic Book Day festivities at Krypton Comics! If you’re in the area, I hope you’ll come by and say hello! Krypton is a great store… though I admit, I’m nervous. The story carries so much awesome stuff! The last time I was there I ended up buying every treasury edition comic that had ever been published! I fear for the wonders… for the dangers… this trip might hold!
I have a comic coming out as part of the event—DIABLO: DAWN OF HATRED #0 (more on that a little later). I’ll be signing them (and pretty much whatever else folks may bring) all day long!
If you’re not in the Omaha area, definitely look into shops in your neck of the woods that are participating in Free Comic Book Day. Many shops make a big deal out of it, hosting creators, local artists, cosplayers, and more. It’s a great opportunity to pick up some free comic books. Most importantly, it’s a great way to support your local comic book store. While you’re there grabbing some free books, buy a few books, too!
I’m excited to be hitting the road with JimmyZ. It’s been far, far too long since we’ve done a roadtrip together. We always have a good time. We always get ourselves into adventures. And we always have some great conversations and brainstorming sessions. It’ll feel like old times!
I started recording footage for THE CULLENOSCOPY this week. I’ve been preparing, setting up cameras, testing microphones, buying lights, and more for weeks in anticipation of starting these recordings.
So… of course it all went horribly wrong.
Within minutes of the first recording with a co-host, the camera and mic (which had been working up to that point) lost connection. For the life of me, I couldn’t get either device to work. Thinking as quickly as my addled brain can (and relying on decades of faking my way through the various careers and tasks I have no business tackling), I found an app to connect my iPhone as a camera. I bought it…
…and found out it doesn’t work with my recording software…
…so I bought a different app and managed to get everything hobbling along. It doesn’t look as great as I wanted, but I’ll take it as a learning opportunity and try to do better next time.
There will be at least a significant portion of this week spent figuring out cameras and microphones… again. Sometimes I feel this might be the insurmountable task that stabs at me from Hell’s heart. I’ve never been a perfectionist. I don’t believe the “perfect” state exists. In fact, I think the idea of perfection was planted in our lizard brains just to trip us up time and again. Lately, though, I’ve been having a rough time with it. I want this thing to be as near-perfect as possible.
All the while, the gremlins are out to get me!
I am thrilled to announce that I have partnered with The Threads Collab to offer some awesome t-shirts, hoodies, backpacks, notebooks, and more! Slip into something comfortable and show your support! I think my personal fave is the black-on-black (as dark as my soul) BUNN logo shirt, but they’re all pretty slick!
INTERVIEW - Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt Discuss Returning to the World of THE SIXTH GUN (Daily Dead)
If you read this newsletter, then you most certainly know that THE SIXTH GUN is coming back! In this interview, Hurtt and I discuss our thoughts on the return of our iconic series.
Over on CULLEN BUNN’S MONSTER CLUB, a group of readers have formed a book club for THE SIXTH GUN. If you’re a fan of the title, you should check that out and join in the conversation. It’s been fun for me and has reminded me of some elements of the story that I had forgotten. This week, the discussion has focused on WINTER WOLVES.
DIABLO: DAWN OF HATRED #0 (FCBD)
FROM BLIZZARD'S AWARD-WINNING, BEST-SELLING VIDEO GAME SERIES
DIABLO returns to printed comics for the first time in over a decade!
Horror auteur Cullen Bunn (Harrow County) teams up with award-winning illustrator Daniele Serra to explore the evils prowling Sanctuary following the cataclysmic events of DIABLO IV and its first expansion VESSEL OF HATRED.
Derris and his barbarian tribe are in need of a miracle. With their leader gravely ill, they have traveled far seeking Akarat, champion of the poor and downtrodden. The people say that Akarat has risen after centuries of death to heal the world with Light...and Derris is nearly desperate enough to believe them. But in the shadow of this savior, a new age is rising: an Age of Hatred.
I wanted to see SINNERS on opening weekend, but work and other commitments got in the way. But Cindy, Roman, and I went to see the movie over the weekend. We loved it. I had, in my circles of friends, complained that the later previews gave away a little too much about the movie. I stand by that, though I know trailers have a job to do and sometimes that means giving away some surprises. There were, however, still many, many surprises in the movie.
I don’t want to speak too soon… especially because the year is still young and I can’t remember all the horror movies I’ve watched so far… but SINNERS is at the top of my list for faves!
