Issue 260: Planetfall 2025
Nightmare Fuel is the official newsletter for fans of my work. Thank you for subscribing. Please share it with others if you think they might be interested!
Planet Comicon in Kansas City is one of my favorite conventions every year. It’s always a great time, always the perfect chance for face-to-face time with readers, always a good opportunity to see friends and colleagues. I’ll be heading that way in just a few days. If you’re gonna be there, I hope I’ll see you there.
For the last several days, I’ve been getting stock together for the convention. My studio is a disaster area of comics, graphic novels, bags and boards, boxes, Sharpies, and other essential convention gear. I’ve been sorting and cataloging and ordering books to bring with me.
This year, I’ll have a few exclusive items at my table, Including the Jumpscare #1 Creator Exclusive Variant, the Quill & Codex Base Rules zine, and the Daemonrot sampler. All of these items will be in limited supply… and when they’re gone, they’re gone. I’ll also have some free items on hand while supplies last.
We even have a few copies of Quill & Codex that will be accompanied by original pieces of art!

I’ll be giving these out at specific times (notably after my panel on Saturday) but subscribers to this newsletter only need mention that they read about it, and I’ll make sure to give you the freebies straight away.
My table can be found at 1439/1441. It’s a new location for me this year, very close to the Outland Entertainment booth!
The panel, by the way, is Horror Comics - Capturing the Nightmare on the Page, which takes place on Saturday at 12:30. I’ll be there along with Jeremy Haun and Tony Moore.
During the convention, I get very little time to do anything other than camp out at my table. I’m going to try and make time to search for some old horror magazines, of course. I’m also hoping to get a couple of new pieces for my Monster Manual and Fiend Folio sketchbooks… but that’ll all depend on how the early stages of the convention unfold. And I’ll be hitting up a few of my favorite KC haunts and connecting with some friends while I’m there.
FINAL ORDER CUTOFF ALERT!
This newsletter goes out on Monday, March 17. That is the Final Order Cutoff for Arcana Royale #1! So… if you haven’t done so already… this is your last chance to pre-order this book! Visit or call your favorite comic book retailer and tell them you want the book.
Here’s an interview with Freak Sugar about the series.
And here’s a video interview I did with Comicon.com about the book!
If you live in or around Columbia MO, I have a signing set up at Distant Planet Comics and Collectibles. It takes place on April 5 from 11 - 4. That’s the week the first issue of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe… One Last Time comes out. I’ll be signing there pretty much all day. At the end of the signing, the shop is hosting a “Cupcakes with Cullen” event where I’ll give the lowdown on the world of comics. Afterwards, I’m gonna hit the nearby retro arcade. Should be a blast!
I’ve been slowly working on something new.
Something that genuinely terrifies me.
It’s definitely out of my comfort zone.
I’ve been toying with it for a few weeks now… since before my trip to LA… and it is starting to rapidly coalesce into something real. The project has a name. It has a focus. I’ve been doing a lot of planning and prep work. By the end of April, I should be in a position to let you know exactly what I’ve been cooking up.
As with all my nonsense, I’ll need your support to pull it off.
Prepare yourself.
So… no new comics coming out this week, BUT there are two FREE levels of Daemonrot showing up. The first drops on the 19th. The second drops on the 20th. Each of these levels presents a “five room” dungeon that connects into a much, much larger super-dungeon! From this point, a new FREE Daemonrot level will launch every 2 weeks or so.
Level 0 - The Skeleton. The dungeons of Daemonrot await! Fortune and glory might be found within! First, though, you must traverse the skeletal remains of the Beast. A dungeon adventure for the Quill & Codex RPG (but it is easily adaptable to whatever game system you like).
Level 1 - The Gruesome Gullet. Descending through an (un)natural chimney in the earth, you discover a nightmare realm. Hideous spores, molds, and fungus await in the first harrowing level of Daemonrot. A dungeon adventure for the Quill & Codex RPG (but it is easily adaptable to whatever game system you like).
This week, I’ve been trying to recover from ECCC and prepare for Planet Comicon. I’ve also been trying to get my garage in a little better shape. This has given me very little time to indulge in the world around me.
The family has been watching the final few episodes of Cobra Kai… though we’re not quite done yet, and we’ve been watching the new season of Reacher. Enjoying both of these shows. I don’t know that I love these newer episodes as much as I loved the early ones… but I’m still getting a kick out of them.
At ECCC, I grabbed a few Critical Kit games. Be Like a Cat, Be Like a Crow, D666, and Samurai Goths of the Apocalypse. Most of these are solo games. All of them are in a nice mini-game or zine format. I’ve been perusing them as I have time, and they’re all a lot of fun.
