Yesterday, I called my pal Brian Hurtt and immediately launched into the pitch for a new project I was cooking up. Once I was done explaining this masterpiece, Brian let the silence stretch for a few seconds.
Then he said, “Is this the kind of thing you come up with when you have too much free time?”
Which is how I knew I had a winner on my hands.
I’ll share the idea with readers of Nightmare Fuel when the time is right, of course. For now, I’m going to quietly keep developing it as I figure out what to do with it. I don’t think it is a prose or comic project, but who knows?
What, though, is this mysterious “free time” Brian mentioned? That is NOT on brand for ol’ Cullen, is it?
As I’ve hinted at pretty much all year long, my… situation… is in a state of change right now. Change for the better. One of those changes, which has only come along in very recent days, brings with it…
I wouldn’t say “free time.”
But I would say “breathing room.”
And that’s something I haven’t had in a long time. Most certainly not in the last few years.
It feels a little strange, being able to see the path ahead, knowing where my next steps will take me, and being excited—not terrified—by the mysteries and surprises that still await.
